Introduction
Some presentations and templates are still built for the classic 4:3 slide format. Converting them to widescreen the standard PowerPoint way (Design → Slide Size → Widescreen) stretches every shape on the slide uniformly, which distorts photos and logos and throws off your carefully tuned margins.
The presentaid Convert to 16:9 (Smart Resize) tool converts your presentation the smart way instead:
- Your left and right margins ("no-fly zone") stay visually unchanged.
- Pictures, photos, and round shapes/icons keep their exact size and aspect ratio - they are never stretched or distorted.
- Ordinary content (text, tables, colored shapes, …) stretches to fill the new, wider slide.
- Font sizes are never changed.
- The conversion is applied to your slide master(s), layouts, and every slide in the presentation in a single step.

Notice how the margins on the left and right stay the same, the photo and the round status icon keep their exact size and shape, the logo stays anchored near the right margin, and only the text and the colored content blocks stretch to fill the extra width.
How to Convert a Presentation
- Open the 4:3 presentation that you want to convert.
- In the presentaid ribbon, go to About → Expert Tools → Convert to 16:9 (Smart Resize).

Ribbon About Expert Tools Convert to 16:9 - Confirm the dialog to start the conversion.
Attention: This will resize every slide, layout, and master in your presentation. We recommend saving a backup of your file first if you want to keep the original. The entire conversion can be undone in a single step with Ctrl+Z.
Note: If your presentation is already widescreen (16:9 or wider), presentaid will let you know that there is nothing to convert.
What Stays the Same, What Stretches
| Element | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Left/right margins | Preserved - your no-fly zone stays visually the same. |
| Pictures & photos | Kept at their exact original size and aspect ratio, repositioned to stay near whichever margin they were originally closest to. |
| Circular/oval shapes | Kept as perfect circles/ovals - never stretched into an ellipse. |
| Date & slide number placeholders | Kept at their exact size and font, repositioned near the nearest margin. |
| Text, titles, footer text, tables, and other shapes | Stretched to fill the wider slide, keeping the original font size. |
| Full-bleed backgrounds (bars or images spanning the whole slide) | Stretched to span the new slide edge-to-edge without gaps. |
Note: Font size is never changed by this tool - only position and size (geometry) are adjusted.
Tips
- Review the converted presentation for any shapes that look unusual. The conversion covers the vast majority of common layouts, but very complex or heavily overlapping designs may still need a manual touch-up.
- The tool only converts from 4:3 to 16:9. It does not support other aspect ratio conversions.
